Space Maintainers

Preserving Proper Dental Alignment

Prevents Shifting and Crowding
By keeping adjacent teeth in their proper positions, space maintainers ensure there’s enough room for the adult tooth to emerge naturally. This can reduce the need for extensive orthodontic treatments later on, saving both time and cost.
Supports Jaw and Facial Development
Maintaining the correct spacing allows for more balanced growth of the jaw and supports proper facial structure. It can also help minimize the risk of bite problems and misalignment.
Encourages Easier Oral Hygiene
A well-aligned smile makes it simpler for children to brush and floss effectively, helping prevent plaque buildup and cavities. When teeth shift, it often creates tight or awkward spaces that are harder to keep clean.
1. Fixed Space Maintainers
Unilateral: Band & Loop
A common option for younger children, this device uses a small metal band wrapped around a neighboring tooth, with a loop extending into the empty space to hold it open.
Unilaterla: Crown & Loop
Similar to the band and loop, but used when a crown is placed on the supporting tooth. This can be helpful if the supporting tooth has its own restorations or damage.
Bilateral: Lower Lingual Holding Arch and Nance Appliance
Specifically designed for lower teeth, a lingual arch spans the inside (tongue side) of the lower jaw from molar to molar, preventing the back teeth from shifting forward.

2. Removable Space Maintainers
Acrylic Appliances
These are custom-fitted devices similar to retainers. They can be removed for eating, brushing, or special occasions. However, consistent wear is essential to maintain the appropriate space, and younger children may find removable appliances more challenging to manage.
3. Groper Appliance
The Placement Process
- Initial Assessment: We begin with a thorough examination and X-rays to confirm the need for a space maintainer and determine the best type for your child’s situation.
- Taking Impressions: A quick and painless mold or digital scan of your child’s mouth ensures that the space maintainer is custom-designed for a snug, comfortable fit.
- Fitting & Placement: Once the appliance is ready, we carefully place it, making any minor adjustments needed for proper alignment and bite. In most cases, local anesthesia is not required for placement.
- Check-Ups & Monitoring: We’ll schedule follow-up visits to ensure the space maintainer remains in good condition and to monitor the progress of the developing permanent tooth. If adjustments are needed, we’ll handle them promptly to keep everything on track.
Oral Hygiene
Encourage your child to brush twice a day and floss carefully around the space maintainer to prevent plaque or food from accumulating.
Dietary Recommendations
Sticky, chewy, or hard foods can damage or dislodge the appliance. Limit items like chewing gum, caramel, or crunchy snacks. Encourage healthier alternatives that won’t place stress on the space maintainer.
Regular Checkups
Consistent dental visits help us ensure the device remains in place and to monitor the timing of the permanent tooth eruption. If your child experiences any discomfort or if the device feels loose, contact us for an evaluation.
